Broadcasting live from Scotch on the Rocks! Just received a mail from LinkedIn that the “AIR desktop reporting” group has been approved. If you’re a frequent user of the current beta and want to keep track of the project roadmap, suggest features or just want to get in touch with me to discuss the project you can join the group by following this link.
Cheers!
Ah, Coldfusion … I used to program a lot of cfml when I was a freelancer. After changing careers and working for companies I never used it anymore, they would not allow it. Instead they made fun me, ridiculised the technology and treated me as a Coldfusion-joker. It’s a shame, they didn’t know better ;)
This is why I’m so excited to go to Scotch on the Rocks. It’s like travelling back in time, in a good way, and discovering what I’ve been missing all those years while Coldfusion advanced. It’s a thouch of nostalgia with a fresh new breeze of innovation. It’s a conference were I’ll be able to sit down, watch the sessions and learn something new and exciting. I’m really looking forward to it!
But even for those who don’t use Coldfusion there will be a lot of Flex and AIR goodness as well, brought to you by Peter Elst, Andrew Shorten, Mark Drew, Borre Wessel and myself. I’ll be giving two sessions and for the first time I’m going to do one that’s not about Flex or AIR, or about coding in general. So if you need to get away from all the technical stuff you should come to my session “Web analytics for the developer”.
See you there!
For the last year I’ve been working on the Google Analytics Desktop Reporting tool, and for the last few months I’ve been traveling around a lot giving presentations and stuff. During that time I learned a lot about web analytics and while I certainly don’t see myself as an expert I probably know more about it than the average developer. In an effort to share some of the stuff I learned I compiled a list of 5 tips for using Google Analytics:

Europe’s biggest free multimedia event is opening its doors tomorrow! Multi-Mania 2008 is going to be a blast!
I know it’s completely fully booked but that should not stop from coming over, the secret password at the door is “boom-script” ;)
As usual Thomas Joos has released a mobile app to get around easily and find your way to the party. Talking about that party … we’re sponsering it and it’s going to be an all-nighter. After giving away free beers at FITC we’re going to keep that tradition and this time we’re giving away Flash Lite courses, Scotch on the Rocks tickets and a Nokia N95!
See you at the party
Cheers!
So yeah, apparently the current beta has expired and a forgot all about the expiration logic I put in there. Thx for all the mails guys ;)
I updated the download link for beta 3 with a new version or you can directly download it here.
Made a few updates, changes and bug fixes while removing the expiration logic. These are the most important things:
Sorry it took a few days, but it’s like 24 degrees outside and we don’t get that often.
Cheers!
Yes, CSI Miami has a custom coded Flash video player. Doesn’t make any sense? … read on …
I’m a huge CSI fan and I regularly go to cbs.com to watch the latest episodes online. They always manage to dazzle me with their new technology and cutting edge tools, and lately it’s been getting funnier every time I watch. Especially Horatio Caine, he’s like the modern age Chuck Norris!
Anyways, during one of the latest episodes, “Ambush”, two CSI’s were able to arrest an ex-CSI member because he used the same “custom coded Flash video player” as the CSI Miami team uses!
This is the conversation the two CSI’s were having while staring at the HTML source code of the specific website:

Dear compatriots and fellow citizens,
As not having a government isn’t enough, it seems now that we’re also in the last place for the onAir-tour registrations.
It saddens me to see us at the bottom of the list, and as always, a few steps behind the Netherlands …
I know you’re probably thinking you’re already an AIR expert and that you don’t need to learn this shit. And as smart as we Belgians are you’re probably right.
But for heavens sake, if you’re not doing this for your country then please do it for Serge. As you know Serge Jespers recently became a platform evangelist and is like the “Jean Claude van Damme” of the Belgian Flash community. But what you probably don’t know is that ever since Serge joined the evangelists team Mike and the others have been making fun of him and giving him a hard time … they even made him do the Pacifica demo at MAX, secretly hoping for the connection to fail. So please, register for the onAir tour, support Serge and give him a pat on the back while your there. He needs it …
That being said, I wouldn’t be posting this if there wasn’t anything in it for me so here’s a line in Dutch; “Rep u naar de Adobe onAir-tour site en registreer als de bliksem je plaats voor deze unieke gelegenheid”. Cough up those AIR stickers Mike!
Just a quick note; I ported the current beta of the Analytics Reporting Suite to AIR 1.0. Download here.
Enjoy ;)
Andrew Shorten confirmed it a while ago, but now it’s official. The on AIR tour comes to Europe and will visit 12 cities in two legs of two weeks.
Each city will host a free one day conference on AIR and will be packed with technical sessions, showcases and discussions. Registration is required so don’t forget to register here.
I’ll be joining the team for 2 events, Brussels and Londen:
7 April - The Claridge- Brussels
9 April -The Brewery - Londen
See you there!
We are nearing the release of the Analytics Reporting Suite for Google Analytics. At this point the business logic, data components and the core features are ready so now we’re starting to integrate the UI.
In the past I have shared some screenshots of our current skin and the feedback was great, but looking at screenshots and actually interacting with data are two very different things.
I want to make sure we’re on the right track and that’s why I’d like your opinion on this. Ultimately it is you who will be interacting with the UI and it’s very important to me you enjoy the experience. I’d like to know which UI you would prefer in the upcoming release and give your vote in the poll to the right. If you’d like to share any additional insights please leave a comment.
These are the options:
The black skin with heavy graphics and effects.
- This one looks very cool and screenshots are appealing
- Is pretty detailed and has nice effects
- It’s very dominant and in your face, content is king and it might be just a bit too much
- Would you use a black UI on a daily base?
A clean and simple UI that looks more like the Google Analytics web interface
- A white version similar to the current beta but more sophisticated
- Easier to switch between web and desktop version because UI’s are similar
- Doesn’t look very original, more business/Flex like
- For most users data analysis is boring, and a business type UI might scare them away
Please submit your vote and any additional comments you might have. I will take your feedback very seriously and if the outcome clearly pushes in one direction I will follow your vote. Power to the people! ;)
I’m very excited to announce the addition of 2 new members to our team:
Christophe Herreman
Together with Sven and I he’ll be part of the core Flex Team. We’re working hard to create a killer Flex ensemble and Christophe is certainly a great move in that direction.
Christophe has been working on Flex based e-learning solutions at Indie Group and is also an active contributer to many open source projects like Prana (Actionscript 3 inversion of control) and as2lib.
Frederic Lierman
Frederic is a CG artist with advanced expertise in 3D character concept design, digital painting and story boarding. He will broaden the service range of Boulevart and will strengthen the Flash team to support high level 3d productions.
For the past 2 years he has been working in Germany at Crytek/EA Games where he worked on the immensely popular game Crysis.
I recently received a lot of mails about the current beta of the Analytics Reporting Suite and its support for AIR beta 3 and the upcoming AIR 1.0 release. Some of you were not able to install the current beta and others were wondering if there is going to be a port for AIR 1.0. Here’s the thing:
“I can’t run the Analytics Reporting Suite on AIR beta 3″
Yes, you can! You just need to have AIR beta 2 installed as well. If you’re only running AIR beta 3, uninstall it, install AIR beta 2 first and then install AIR beta 3. Both runtimes are still available on Adobe Labs.
“Will there be a port for AIR 1.0 ?”
Yes, in fact it’s already done and will be available to download from this blog within a few weeks once AIR 1.0 is released. This new beta version will expire when we release the 1.0 version. Originally I wasn’t planning on doing a port to 1.0, but because Serge asked so nicely I did it anyway. Please buy him a drink at FITC Amsterdam, and while you’re at it I can use one too ;)
“When will the 1.0 version of the Analytics Reporting Suite be launched?”
Best guess is mid April, stay tuned for more info.
For any other info, feature request, bugs, etc .. you can still reach me at magnico [at] gmail [dot] com.
Cheers!
The Flex charting components are very functional, but do they look great? NO, they don’t ;) !
Together with Wannes I started skinning the charting components for the next release of the Analytics Reporting Suite and our hard work is starting to pay off. It’s not very straight forward to go beyond the regular fills and strokes (mainly because the charting components are not open source, grrr) so for the PieChart for example it took us 2 days. We extended the base PieChart class to add the necessary eye candy. It’s all programmatic skinning to keep it lightweight.
This is the final result (click the screenshot to open the animated example):
I Believe we did a fine job and if you’re interested to see how it’ done be sure to check out my session on Flex Data Visualization at FITC in Amsterdam or Toronto.
Cheers!
